The biological process involved in tooth movement is the same for both children and adults alike. Braces aren’t just for children anymore. Parents are still making regular trips to the orthodontic office, but these days more are leaving their children in the waiting room or having treatment at the same time.

While it may seem we are focused on children, many of our patients are adults. More than 1.3 million people begin orthodontic treatment each year, and one out of every four of them is over the age of 18. Technological advances in treatment and equipment and new aesthetic options make it easier and more practical for more adults to benefit from orthodontic treatment.

While orthodontics can have great cosmetic benefits, many adults do not realize that well aligned teeth and properly fitting teeth (the bite or occlusion) may also enhance their ability to keep their teeth for a lifetime. Often, it is our adult patients who are more appreciative of the many benefits or orthodontic treatment, after having lived with unfavorable smiles and bites for many years.
